October 29, 2010 Ronda's Corner Wow! Wasn't the Barry Britt training fantastic yesterday!
I'm going to use my "corner" this week to restate something that those who were at the training yesterday probably already heard.
As of last week, our holdings in the OCLC catalog are up to date. They hadn't been updated since we first started using the system many - many years ago - (They had Sally Knight listed as the contact. For those who remember, you know that was way back). Before, I would be lucky if I got one or two requests a month for titles our library system owned, and half the time the title had been discarded years ago.
This week I have been receiving seven or eight requests a day for titles we actually have! This is fantastic news for all of us. Our cost for using OCLC will drop because they credit our account for each book we lend. Your stats for your library will go up because your books will be leaving the shelf. Your books will get to see parts of the United States that we may never see. This week's books have been sent to Providence, RI; Boise, ID; Louisville, KY; Oshkosh, WI; Stow, OH; and we had one go to an address on Broadway, NY, NY.
So, keep watching your inbox for ILL requests. Maybe one of your books will be sitting on a beach in Florida or California this winter.
The New York State Library has posted a new webinar, "Outcome-Based Evaluation (OBE): An Introduction," at: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/obe/webinar/obepresentation.htm
The State Library worked with OBE Certified Trainer Amanda R. Latreille to develop the webinar. The 20-minute presentation serves as an introduction to the OBE approach and is intended for library staff members who are new to OBE or who need a quick refresher.
The following topics are covered:
-The definition of OBE
-The many benefits of using OBE in planning and evaluating library programs and services
-How to write basic, measurable outcomes with data sources and target achievement levels
-The difference between outcomes and outputs
The webinar is available as a PowerPoint presentation with audio or PDF. Both are free to download. Funding for webinar development was provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
